School Counselor- GEAR UP!

My name is Latiesha Bogar and I am the GEAR UP school counselor for 7th and 8th grade students at Jefferson Community School. I have worked in the MPLS school district for 13 years and in this time I have been fortunate enough to experience positive changes within our schools. I have also been fortunate enough to work with peers who are dedicated and committed to finding new and improved ways of engaging and educating students.

The Mission of a school counselor here at Jefferson is to promote a positive school climate that inspires students to be on time, engaged, and have a positive attitude towards learning. Guiding students as they develop academic and social skills, which will help them to be disciplined and lifelong learners; who are productive and responsible citizens in their communities. Counselors address student needs in three areas: Social/Emotional, Academic and Career. Counseling is provided to individual students and families, and through the My Life Plan curriculum, to classrooms of 7th and 8th grade students.

The goal of GEAR Up (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is to increase students’ academic performance and prepare them for college, increase the number of students to graduate from high school, increase the number of students to enroll and succeed in college, and to increase students’ and families knowledge of college and postsecondary options, and how to plan and pay for them.

Parents/guardians are partners with teachers and the counselor to ensure student success. I encourage families to contact me with questions, concerns and feedback.
