My name is Maria Bowker and I teach 6th-8th grade math here at Jefferson.  This is my first year teaching and I am so excited to be teaching in Minneapolis Public Schools.  I love what I do, I love working with kids, and orchestrating the chaos that is middle school.  I believe in problem solving, finding patterns, collaboration, persistence, and learning from mistakes.  Math is a tough subject for many, but with all of my being I believe ALL students can find success in my class if they give consistent effort.  I am very passionate about math, but really it’s just my avenue for reaching kids.

I was born and raised in Wasilla, Alaska where I grew up hunting, fishing, and spending my time outdoors.  I graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. in Mathematics and played rugby.  I was a resident in the Twin Cities Teacher Collaborative where I co-taught 9th grade for one year at Southwest High School before coming to Jefferson.  I am currently finishing up my Master’s in Teaching from Bethel University.  In my free time I play rugby for the Twin Cities Amazons, go camping all over the state, and play piano and guitar.

If you can do math… You can do anything!
